What will you learn in this Engineering Studies: Welder N1 course?
This course offers the theoretical part of the training for prospective artisans via the NATED Programme. The N1 level is the foundation level in this 3-level engineering programme. Mathematics, science and drawing, form the basis of all engineering trades. Learn the skills and techniques for welding used in the construction and maintenance of pipelines, boilers, nuclear reactors, pressure vessels, motor vehicles, oil rigs and turbine castings.

Course Start Dates
With College SA you can start studying whenever you want, there are no specific course start dates since we offer distance learning. Please speak to our Educational Planners about your enrolment and study options.
- College SA fees do not include external exam fees.
- Exam fees fluctuate from centre to centre
- Exam fees are payable separately by the student to College SA who will then pay it to the examination centre.
- Exams are written in April, August and November of each year.
- You are eligible for the exams once you have successfully completed three written assignments; once you have registered, the school will advise you on the assignment- and exam registration deadlines.
You have to successfully complete and submit the required 3 assignments per subject in order for College SA to prepare your term mark. College SA will ensure that term marks are submitted to your exam venue and, together with your exam, these are submitted to the Department of Higher Education and Training for evaluation. Once you have successfully completed all the required national exams you will be awarded a National Certificate.

We are a private distance learning college accredited with Umalusi, the Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training – Accreditation number 15FET02 00025 to offer NATED: Engineering studies N1 –N3 qualifications. As a training provider, we offer technical courses in boilermaking, welding, fitting and turning, motor mechanics and electrical engineering. Umalusi is the quality assurance council in General Education and Training. They set the quality standards and criteria to uphold the academic rigor of the qualifications as offered by College SA. What are subjects?
Subjects are the particular fields of study that are covered in a course. The subjects below make up this course and will need to be completed in order for you to complete this course.
Mathematics is one of the three compulsory fundamental subjects in the NATED programme. Learn how to solve equations, word problems and manipulate formulae. You will get the skills to do algebraic graphs, trigonometry, logarithms and factorisation. The purpose of this module is to produce a person who can confidently apply mathematics in other disciplines and in real life situations.
Engineering Science N1
In the module you will learn about the laws of physics that provide the background principles required to understand engineering systems. You will cover the following scientific elements: energy, work, power, composition of matter, statics, dynamics and electricity.
Plating and Structural Steel Drawing N1
Learn how to correctly and skillfully use drawing equipment. Equip yourself with the skills to draw geometrical figures by means of a compass, drawing instruments and according to corresponding scale. Learn about first angle orthographic projection, welding and parallel, radical and triangulation line methods.
Metalworkers Theory N1
This module covers general safety rules, instructions and machinery safeguards. You will learn the skills to work with and differentiate between marking off tools and general hand tools. Get knowledge about blacksmithing, riveting, electric arc welding and oxy-acetylene equipment and welding. Learn about the identification, properties and different types of metals.
