Diploma Courses

A diploma is a tertiary qualification that can take anything from twelve months to three years to complete. Diploma courses can be studied at a college (public or private) or a university of technology (formerly known as technikons).

Even though a diploma course requires much more dedication and study time than a certificate course, it may lead to more job opportunities.

Types of Diplomas

According to the National Qualifications Framework (NQF), diplomas fall under the Higher Education and Training (HET) NQF band. The two diplomas that are recognised by the NQF are:

National Diplomas (NQF Level 5)

A national diploma can be obtained after completing a senior certificate or trade certificate. It is nationally recognised, but may not be relevant when applying for a job outside South Africa. National diplomas can take up to two years to complete.

Higher Diplomas (NQF Level 6)

A higher diploma can be nationally and/or internationally recognised, depending on the establishment. Higher diplomas take no less than three years to complete.
